Microsoft 365 Agent Toolkit - Building OnboardingBuddy part 1

1 min read

You don't need VS Code to build a Copilot agent.

Most people meet the Microsoft 365 Agents Toolkit as a VS Code extension. Fewer know that the same toolkit ships as a CLI, and that everything the extension does, you can do from a terminal (with Node.js installed). 💘

npm install -g @microsoft/m365agentstoolkit-cli

atk -h

That second command is tip number one. It lists every command the CLI has: create, provision, deploy, validate, share and more.

But why bother with the CLI you might ask?

  • It works in any editor
  • It can be scripted
  • It can be run in a pipeline
  • And your coding agent can use it

Over the next 12 weeks I'll share one atk tip per week. I'm learning in public, so expect a few detours along the way. To keep it concrete, I'll build the same agent all the way through: Onboarding Buddy, a declarative agent that answers new-hire questions.

Next week: the command to run before you touch any code.
